Rich Franklin Still Considered Tops

MMAJunkie recently revealed its poll results  for the question, besides Anderson Silva, who is the best Middleweight in MMA?  Apparently, despite not even fighting at 185lbs anymore, the answer is Rich Franklin.

These poll results are probably accurate considering how dominant Rich Franklin was in the Middleweight division during his reign as champion.  Interestingly, Dan Henderson, who fights Franklin in the 205lb division in January at UFC 93,  is the runner up to Franklin in the Poll Results.  You would have to consider Paulo Filho somewhere in the runnning, despite his being close to insane, and you would have to consider Cung Le, even though he hasn't fought recently and does not plan to fight anytime soon.

Another reason why it would be easy to consider Franklin as the top contender for best Middleweight is simply the fact that there are so little good Middleweight fighters out there, especially in the UFC.

Anderson Silva Vs Chuck Liddell Possible

Chuck Liddell Vs. Anderson Silva PossibleIt is being reported by MMAJunkie that Chuck Liddell may face Anderson Silva next at UFC 95 in London.

Anderson Silva recently defeated Patrick Cote via TKO.  Liddell lost his last fight against Rashad Evans by knockout.

I am fascinated by the idea of a Liddell-Silva matchup.  Anderson Silva normally fights at 185lbs. and is currently the UFC Middleweight Champion.  He has fought at 205lbs and recently beat James Irvin in that weight class.  Liddell might be the UFC's most popular fighter ever, and held the UFC Light Heavyweight Title from April of 2005 until May of 2007.

I love Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell's style of fighting.  He is a counter puncher for the most part and has one of the best sprawls in MMA making him extremely difficult to take down.  This creates very exciting fights for fans and almost always end in a knockout of some sort (either for Liddell or his opponent.)

Anderson Silva is typically a counter puncher himself and has excellent Brazillian jiu-jitsu, having earned a black belt from the Nogueira brothers.

I don't believe this fight would make it anywhere near the ground.  These two would stand and duke it out with Anderson scoring the bulk of shots while Liddell would look for the big knockout punch.  I would hope Liddell would utilize his kicking in a fight like this as I believe he has become far to dependant on his big right hand.  Let's hope the UFC can make this fight happen.

Anderson Silva deafeats Cote

Anderson "The Spider" Silva seems to have had his toughest task in the UFC tonight with Patrick Cote.  Anderson seemed to have won the first few rounds of the bout but this is the first time Anderson has had to go into the third round of a fight in the UFC.

Silva won the fight via a freak knee injury in the beginning of the third round.  Silva threw a punch that missed but Cote's knees buckled.  The fight was stopped 39 seconds into the third round.

Anderson Silva vs James Irvin

Anderson SilvaI did not write a post after UFC's free event on spike TV since I was to busy watching Fedor Emelianenko DEMOLISH Tim Sylvia on Affliction:Banned. So here are some quick thoughts on the UFC event.

Anderson Silva is amazing. He makes everything in the cage look easy. Anderson makes his opponents look like they are moving in water - SLOW. James Irvin should have tapped out at the weigh-ins and saved himself a headache.

The Spider made quick work of Irvin catching a leg kick and throwing a stiff right. It was the third punch he threw. Irvin crumpled into a fetal position and Silva pounced throwing some more rights until Yamasaki had seen enough. One minute into the fight, Silva wins by TKO.

After watching him fight at 205 against a game up-and-comer like Irvin it really makes you wonder how far this guy can go. I have not seen him have a fight in the UFC where he's taken any kind of significant damage. He's taken on the best the 185lb. division has to offer and tore through them. What can he do at 205?
