Nick Diaz Vs. Scott Smith

Great card last night put on by Strikeforce.  Strikeforce has always been an awesome MMA orginization (even Dana White says so) and now with it's acquisition of EliteXC, Strikeforce has some big names to fill fight cards and draw the more casual MMA crowd.

In the upset of the night, Brett Rogers took advantage of a notoriously weak Andrei Arlovski chin and knocked him out very quickly.  jake Shields got knocked around by Robbie Lawler early and then showed his submission skills by locking in a choke hold and submitting him.

My favorite fight of the night was Nick Diaz defeating Scott Smith.  Smith looked good at times during the fight but he never could get a good range.  Diaz picked him apart and ended it with a submission after a brutal liver shot.

Strikeforce results:

  • Jake Shields Defeats Robbie Lawler via submission (guillotine choke) - Round 1, 2:02
  • Brett Rogers Defeats Andrei Alorvski via TKO (strikes) - Round 1, 0:22
  • Nick Diaz Defeats Scott Smith via submission (rear-naked choke) - Round 3, 1:41
  • Joe Riggs Defeats Phil Baroni via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Mike Whitehead Defeats Kevin Randleman via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Jorge Gurgel Gets the Bye-bye from the UFC

Jorge Gurgel

Jorge Gurgel

Jorge Gurgel, famed UFC under-performer, has signed with Strikeforce after being released from the UFC.  Despite receiving fight of the night honors after his last bout in the Octagon, the UFC decided to let him go.

“I am very very excited to be part of Strikeforce and given a chance to fight new blood and capture a belt. UFC has been my family for a few years now but I am ready for the next chapter. There are some amazing contenders in my weight class including Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. I will do whatever it takes to climb to the top of this league.”

Gurgel has had some memorable fights in the UFC refusing to fall back on his strength, BJJ, and always choosing to stand and strike with his opponents.  Jorge says he will go to his jui-jitsu while fighting with Strikeforce and wants to eventually return to the UFC.
